Welcome to Correct Grammar (CG) and to our tutorial document which has deliberate errors. CG flags each error by highlighting it. AT EACH ERROR, read this text. For this first example, replace “which” by clicking the Correct button.
Correct Grammar Checks For Spelling And Grammar Errors In One Pass:
Let's suppose you work for Innomind Creative Corp. When Correct Grammar stops on your company's name, you will want to click Add (although for this example feel free to click Ignore). Clicking Add will put the name into your supplemental user dictionary, so that CG will recognize Innomind as the proper spelling in the future. CG will ask whether you wanted to capitalize Innomind; this way you can enforce the capitalization of proper nouns, trademarks, company names, etc. Should you misspell Inomind, CG will then suggest the correct spelling for you!
If you don't want to add a word to your user dictionary, just click Ignore. CG will recognize that word until the end of your session, when you quit CG. If you have deliberately misspelled a werd (sic), click on Skip 1X. Then CG will flag any further occurrences of the werd as misspellings.
When CG finds a misspelled word, cliking on Lookup will give you suggested spellings. Just double click on the correct word and CG will substitute it in your text. If you have a relatively fast Macintosh, turning on Automatic Spelling Suggestions in the Options menu will find suggestions for you automatically.
Correct Grammar's dictionary contains spelling, grammar and usage information for 135,000 words! This rich dictionary is the root of of Correct Grammar's power. Best of all, you do NOT need to check your spelling before you use CG.
How To Fix Grammar And Style Problems:
We all sometimes make mistakes, so its good to have help. In the previous sentence, Correct Grammar suggests that we are missing an apostrophe. Very often, CG knows exactly how to fix a problem. Whenever you agree with its suggestion, just click the Correct button and CG makes the correction instantly.
The problems you can encounter in a single sentence is often complex. Sentences like the previous one have a disagreement between the subject (problems) and the verb (is). Fixing either one will create a grammatically correct sentence, but only one will result in the sentence you want. In such cases you may need to click Ignore for the first suggestion, and then you will see the appropriate suggestion, changing "is" to "are." Then click Correct to fix the text.
Help With Grammar...and with Correct Grammar:
Correct Grammar provides fast help for you and I. If you are not sure as to why, click the Tutorial button. Click on the arrows and the scroll bar to read through the tutorial information, and click the Resume button when you finish. As you use CG more and more, you'll find yourself remembering things about the language that you had forgotten, and your writing will steadily improve. If you have a question about how Correct Grammar works, rather than about the language, click the Help button. You will get assistance about what you are trying to do.
Revising The Text:
Some problems are more thorny, you need more editing power. In sentences like this, just click on the text and rewrite the paragraph. You can use all the usual Macintosh editing commands. When you click on the Check button, CG will check your entire sentence again. Correct Grammar always rechecks any changes you make in case you introduce a new error.
Doing it your way:
Several Style Guides are provided for different kinds of writing styles. Choose the one most appropriate to your audience as a starting point. If CG questions other elements of your normal style, you can simply and easily ignore the suggestion by clicking the Ignore button.
If you want CG to stop bothering you with a particular type of suggestion, just click the Quiet button. Then indicate whether you want the rule quieted until you change it back (click Permanent) or temporarily (This Session). Basically, the Quiet (as in "be quiet!") button is a shorthand way to make CG shut up when you don't need to see the suggestion it’s making.
For example, if a subordinate clause (like this one) is pointed out as a passive verb construction, you may want to click Quiet. It will depend on which Style Guide you are using. Main clauses in the passive voice (like this one) are also pointed out by CG. A main clause in the passive voice generally weakens your writing, so you should not click Quiet when CG flags a main clause as passive. Once you get more familiar with CG, you will want to explore its categories in detail, which you will do with the Rules menu. We suggest that you refer to the manual for a complete explanation.
On Being Readable:
Some of Correct Grammar's suggestions dissect your sentences in terms of their difficulty or convoluted construction, particularly if you, like many writers, use multiple clauses and disproportionately lengthy words to communicate your message, when a short, concise sentence would make your point much more clearly and emphatically. CG will detect excessively long sentences that your target audience may find too complex to read. Of course, you control the readability settings that determine what is too long or too hard to read.
